Biotechnology is a branch of biology that is currently developing rapidly. Career opportunities for graduates of the Biotechnology are very broad. Graduates of the Biotechnology can build careers as bioentrepreneurs, forensics, extension workers, consultants, NGO activists, formulators and policy makers, researchers, lecturers, and work in other positions in the private and government sectors. One of the careers most sought after by students and graduates of the Biotechnology is to become a researcher or academician. Biotechnology Study Program held a public lecture with speakers from NARA Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) on September 1st, 2023 at 3rd floor, PAU Building UGM. Starting the public lecture meeting this time, Prof. Hisaji Maki as public relations explained the profile of NAIST to the students who attended the lecture.  NAIST is a national university of Japan located in Kansai Science City, the border region between Nara, Osaka, and Kyoto. Founded in 1991, NAIST consists of schools in three integrated fields: information science, biological science, and materials science. In 2018, NAIST underwent an organizational transformation to continue research in these areas while promoting interdisciplinary research and education in traditional fields. With this new, one-of-a-kind school organization, NAIST strives forward with the goal of conducting cutting-edge research in cutting-edge fields and training students to become future leaders in science and technology. read more

The material He presented was related to research design, research ethics, and the integrity of a researcher. Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia that lectured by Andreas Donny Prakarsa, S.Farm., M.Sc. He is working as a Head of Corporate Relationship at PT. Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia. Previously, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy at Sanatha Darma University, Yogyakarta, and continued his Master program by taking Medical Biotechnology at Wageningen University, The Netherlands. read more

Bioteknologi UGM – Master of Biotechnology study program at Postgraduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has recently received an honoured opportunity to conduct a public lecture with Prof. Dr. Michael Sauer, Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Biotechnology, from Universität für Bodenkultur Wien (BOKU University). In this public lecture, he presented a lecture of bioprocess technology and also offered PhD positions for all of Master’s students in Biotechnology at UGM. Previously, he received a Master’s degree in Biotechnology at the ETH Zürich University, Austria, and continued his PhD program in Biochemistry at the University of Vienna, Austria. read more

FBiotechnology UGM – Master of Biotechnology study program at the UGM Postgraduate School again received the opportunity to have a guest lecture from PT. Kalbe Farma, Tbk represented by Dr. Harry Murti. He serves as Head of Process Development at the Stem Cell Processing Laboratory. Previously, he studied post-doctoral program at Hanyang Biomedical Research Institute, South Korea.

PT Kalbe Farma, Tbk is a pharmaceutical company that now has become healthcare. Some of the strategic business units owned are Pharma which is in charge of the production of over-the-counter drugs such as cold, diarrhea, and prescription drugs. In addition, there is Biopharma which is composed of several divisions such as eyecare, consumer health, logistics, and medical devices. Then there is Kalgen DNA which functions to provide diagnostic kits. read more

The Study Program of Biotechnology, Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada held a public lecture on Friday, December, 9th, 2022 with Mr. Agung Dian Kharisma, S.Pd.Si., M. Biotech., Ph.D. who is the Manager of PT. Widya Teknologi Hayati. PT Widya Teknologi Hayati is a biotechnology research company focusing on exploring and producing bioactive compounds. The material presented in this public lecture is related to the induction of resistance in plants by heat shock treatment. Every plant already has an innate immune system, but sometimes it is not strong enough to fight pathogens. The alternative method of heat shock is one way to improve this. read more

Career in Biotechnology: Dr. Yustian Rovi Alfiansah, S.Si., M.Sc.

Study Program of Biotechnology, Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada, had the opportunity to have a guest lecture with the speaker Dr. Yustian Rovi Alfiansah, on November 2022. The lecture was held online via Zoom application as Dr. Yustian Rovi Alfiansah is currently in Germany for a post-doctoral program at the Alfred Wegener Institute. In addition, he also serves as a researcher at the Research Center for Applied Microbiology, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Dr. Yustian Rovi Alfiansah explained to all students who participated in the lecture that the specialization provided by the university provides great opportunities for future careers. These specializations are in the fields of health, agriculture, industry, and the environment. read more
