Yogyakarta, 16 October 2025 — The Biotechnology Study Program, Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), held a guest lecture for the Biotechnology Career course, featuring Prof. Thorunn Helgason, Head of the School of Biological Sciences and Chair in Ecology at The University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
The event took place in the lecture room, 3rd floor of the PAU Biotechnology Building, and was attended by postgraduate students of the Biotechnology Study Program.

During the first session, Prof. Helgason introduced The University of Edinburgh, one of the world’s leading research universities. She provided insights into opportunities for pursuing doctoral (PhD) studies, various scholarship schemes, and the academic and research disciplines available at the university. The session offered valuable information about the UK higher education system and practical advice for students aspiring to continue their studies and research abroad.
In the second session, Prof. Helgason discussed her research interests, focusing on Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF). She elaborated on the ecological significance of AMF in soil ecosystems, particularly their role in supporting plant growth, enhancing nutrient cycling, and maintaining ecosystem resilience under environmental changes.

This guest lecture provided students with both academic and professional insights into biotechnology careers while strengthening academic collaboration between Universitas Gadjah Mada and The University of Edinburgh. The event is expected to inspire students to engage in impactful biotechnology research that contributes to global sustainability and environmental stewardship.
