The Head of the Study Program of Doctoral in Biotechnology, Graduate School UGM, Dr. Tri Rini Nuringtyas (Mrs. Nuning) and the Head of the Study Program of Master in Biotechnology, Dr. Dini Wahyu Kartika Sari (Mrs. Dini) went on an official trip to the UK in March 2024 to fulfill an invitation from the University of Dundee (UoD). This invitation is intended to strengthen academic and research collaboration between UGM and UoD, as well as following up on the signing of the UGM-UoD MoU regarding the Double Degree PS Masters Program in Biotechnology with the UoD School of Life Sciences (SLS). A series of agendas were carried out during the week-long visit to UoD, including discussions with several leaders of the Master of Science (MSc) and Master by Research (MBR) Study Programs, as well as the Dean of SLS. The agenda for this meeting was to discuss the technical implementation of the double degree program as well as opportunities for UGM alumni to continue their education at the Doctoral level at SLS UoD with the LPDP scholarship scheme. SLS UoD, which is currently a leading institution in the field of life sciences in the UK, is open to accepting students from the UGM Biotechnology Study Program to undertake internships, establish research collaborations, joint supervision, and guest lectures.
The Research Center for Biotechnology held a National Seminar on Biotechnology as an annual agenda that has been going on for a long time. This year’s National Seminar on Biotechnology IX was held on October 21 2023, inviting four talented speakers in each field. The four speakers are Marc Alfons M Peeters (Bambu Nusa Verde), Dr. Yekti Asih Purwestri, S.Si., M.Sc. (Gadjah Mada University), Ts. Dr. Rabiatul Basria S. M. N. Mydin. Nowadays, nanoparticle-based technology is the powerful approach done by many researchers. Nanotechnology offers better biocompatibility and bioavailability. Thus characteristics provide better support for various field of research including health, industry, environment, food, and materials. Through that circumstances, Magister Biotechnology of Universitas Gadjah Mada held General Lecture: Application of Nanoparticles in Biotechnology and Biomedics on Tuesday, October 17, 2023. Biotechnology Study Program UGM invited TS. Dr. Rabiatul Basria S.M.N. Mydin, a researcher from Universiti Sains Malaysia as a keynote speaker.
Biotechnology is a branch of biology that is currently developing rapidly. Career opportunities for graduates of the Biotechnology are very broad. Graduates of the Biotechnology can build careers as bioentrepreneurs, forensics, extension workers, consultants, NGO activists, formulators and policy makers, researchers, lecturers, and work in other positions in the private and government sectors. One of the careers most sought after by students and graduates of the Biotechnology is to become a researcher or academician. In order to provide an overview of careers in the field of research, the Biotechnology Master’s Study Program UGM has been held a career lecture in collaboration with Dr.rer.nat. Yustian Rovi Alfiansah, BRIN researcher, as speaker.
Biotechnology Study Program held a public lecture with speakers from NARA Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) on September 1st, 2023 at 3rd floor, PAU Building UGM. Starting the public lecture meeting this time, Prof. Hisaji Maki as public relations explained the profile of NAIST to the students who attended the lecture. NAIST is a national university of Japan located in Kansai Science City, the border region between Nara, Osaka, and Kyoto. Founded in 1991, NAIST consists of schools in three integrated fields: information science, biological science, and materials science. In 2018, NAIST underwent an organizational transformation to continue research in these areas while promoting interdisciplinary research and education in traditional fields. With this new, one-of-a-kind school organization, NAIST strives forward with the goal of conducting cutting-edge research in cutting-edge fields and training students to become future leaders in science and technology.
